The lagoons and channels of the wetlands lie in a savanna Reserve of over 5000 acres and are a sanctuary for much of tropical Australia's savanna and wetland wildlife and cultural heritage. The Reserve has been developed by the Mareeba Wetland Foundation, a community-based membership organisation.
